Garmin Forerunner 205 Sep 03, 2010 Garmin Forerunner 205 Waterproof Running GPS
I have bought FOUR of these for family members who either run or walk for exercise. One is a backpacker. The product works amazingly well and receives satellite signals where other similar products have failed in the past.
The only reason I have not rated it five stars is the battery life of the Garmin, which is about ten hours. It can be extended by turning it off while not needing it. That is fine for walkers and runners but not for backpackers over two days. However, it can be recharged in the field with the Energizer cell phone recharger IN THE ORANGE PACKAGE with AA Lithium batteries.
Basically, it's a great product and I've put my money where my mouth is. All four gift recipients have been most pleased.
Great tool! Aug 27, 2010 Great, very helpfull for my running, keep me in control of my miles and easy to read while you are running, very water resistent, I wash all the sweating with soap and water, no counting on i was cough by the rain many times.
Great Product, but... Aug 25, 2010 The Forerunner 205 is an excellent piece of technology and has many positive qualities: It is light, comfortable, efficient (excellent battery life), feature-rich, and fairly accurate.
However, there is a glaring problem that is both confusing and annoying: It takes 12 minutes (this is not an exaggeration) to "synchronize" with the satellites every single time you power on the watch. My 205 has the most recent firmware, and I religiously check the web updater for newer firmware. When I power the watch on, I make sure to stand far away from buildings and away from tree cover. I live in Chicago, so it's hard to find a completely open corn field, but the best I can do is to stand in the open parking lot to accommodate my watch. As a result of this ridiculousness, if I want to use my watch, I have to spend at least 10 minutes waiting for it to "synchronize," which is a huge problem if I'm going on a short (3-4 mile) run before work.
Maybe I don't know enough about this issue, but I am pretty certain that the beauty of Geo-Synchronous satellites (like the ones used for GPS), is that they stay in the same spot in the sky. Why does my Garmin Forerunner 205 need to re-synchronize with them every time? If someone from Garmin wants to have a further discussion about this, I would gladly provide all the necessary details. Better yet, if someone from Garmin wants to come by and run with me one morning, the problem would become self-evident within 12 minutes.

Great when it picks up satellites Aug 21, 2010 I have bought two of these - you can't beat the price now, at about $120. There are more full featured models out now, but cost alot more. I would probably give this 5* if it always picked up the satellites easily, but I find it frustrating that about 1 of every 3 times I use it, it takes forever to pick up the satellites, sometimes it never does. I almost always go on runs, walks, bike rides starting from my house, which has a clear view of the sky, but for some reason it's finicky about picking up satellites. Some have suggested it's time of day, but I discount that, because I go out at about the same time every morning.
Anyway, if that is not an issue for you, this is a great device. I love the features, it's really easy to use, and pretty durable. The second day I had it, I was cooling off in a stream, and dropped the unit in the stream completely submerged, but no problem, it survived and is still going strong. I do not recommend running it over with your car, as I did my first one - it did not survive that.

Garmin sports watch Aug 17, 2010 I LOVE THE GARMIN 205 SPORTS WATCH!!! I just started running for the first time in my life in December of 2009 at the age of 48 and I bought the watch 3-4 months after beginning to run. I wanted a watch that was going to be simple to use and comfortable to wear. I mostly use it to set my pace, know how long I have ran, my distance ran, and calories burned. This watch has been very accurate every time I have used it. My daughter bought this same watch and she and I have ran seven 5k's together this summer and we can download the run onto the software provided and review our runs. I pretty much know nothing about loading software onto a computer but I loaded the software for this watch with no assistance and it was very easy to install. I would recommend this watch to anyone as long as you are not going to be running inside and want to use it. You would need to get the 305 or 405 with the foot pod if you are going to run inside and you want to pick up a signal. I run on a treadmill inside that gives me all the information I need so I didn't need anything more than the 205.
