Listen folks Dec 05, 2010
By Daniel C. Dennis
"InvincibleSummer"
This slice of late 60's psychadelia / introspect early 70's represents a beautiful, almost unknown catalogue by a magical singer/songwriter who came out of nowhere, dazzled Woodstock (never made the final film cut - not that kind of performer)and vanished despite great reviews by those who really listen. Bert's pictures give you the image of a gentle, sweet hippie with tumbleweed hair and a dreamy smile. The personae fits the music as a way of categorizing him, but his voice is so disarming and poignant that musically he is head and shoulders above most of the singer-songwriters crowding the early seventies scene. Here is a voice so distinctive and warm that it's one of the mysteries of the music world that Mr Sommers never made it big. At times you feel you're hearing a sweeter Tim Buckly, although closer to other comparisons is the proximity to Australia's legendary G Wayne Thomas of "Morning of the Earth" fame. The songs, most of them his own compositions bar "America," described by Paul SImon as far and away the best version ever, are very fine in craftsmanship and feeling. Bert's joy and angst are always blended with taste and intelligence in songs about human misunderstanding and the complexities of self-approval. This guy will creep into your favourites list if you let him. Fame be hanged - here's terrific artistry that missed commercial approval but little by little has won increasing respect and affection over the years since Bert's untimely death.

A Little Known Gem of an Artist Nov 01, 2010
By Carole Bellacera
"Carole Bellacera"
A friend of mine sent me a YouTube video of Bert Sommer singing "Jennifer" at Woodstock, and I was mesmerized. How is it that I'd never heard of this artist? His voice is so pure, so lyrical. I immediately ordered this CD, and love every song on it. Sad that he died so young, with so little notariety. Check out the YouTube video:
